The Accused
Alex Tamba
Brima, aka Tamba Alex Brima, aka Gullit, is alleged to
have been a former official of the Armed Forces Revolutionary
Council. He was indicted on 7 March 2003 on an 17-count indictment
for crimes against humanity, violations of Article 3 Common to the
Geneva Conventions and of Additional Protocol II (commonly known as
war crimes), and other serious violations of international
humanitarian law. (An 18th count was later added; four counts were
subsequently dropped.) He was arrested and taken into Court custody
on 10 March. At his initial appearance at the temporary courthouse
on Bonthe Island on 15 March, Brima pleaded not guilty to all
charges.
Brima Bazzy
Kamara, aka Ibrahim Bazzy Kamara, aka Alhaji Ibrahim Kamara,
is alleged to have been a senior member of the Armed Forces
Revolutionary Council. He was indicted on 28 May 2003 on an 17-count
indictment for crimes against humanity, violations of Article 3
common to the Geneva Conventions and of Additional Protocol II
(commonly known as war crimes), and other serious violations of
international humanitarian law. (An 18th count was later added; four
counts were subsequently dropped.) On 4 June 2003 Kamara made his
initial appearance before Judge Pierre Boutet at the Special Court's
temporary courthouse on Bonthe Island. At the hearing, Kamara
pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Santigie
Borbor Kanu, aka 55, aka Five-Five, aka Santigie Khanu, aka Santigie
Kanu, aka S.B. Khanu, aka S.B. Kanu, aka Santigie Bobson Kanu, aka
Borbor Santigie Kanu, is alleged to have been a senior
member of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council. Kanu was indicted
on 16 September 2003 on a 17-count indictment for crimes against
humanity, violations of Article 3 Common to the Geneva Conventions
and of Additional Protocol II (commonly known as war crimes), and
other serious violations of international humanitarian law. (An 18th
count was later added; four counts were subsequently dropped.) Kanu
was transferred from the custody of the Sierra Leonean authorities,
where he was awaiting trial on allegations of his involvement in a
January 2003 attack on a military supply warehouse in Freetown. On
23 September he made his initial appearance before Judge Pierre
Boutet at the Special Court's temporary courthouse in Freetown,
where he pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.
