Ambassador Christian Kargbo’s complaint : Is Sierra Leone’s Foreign Service infested with people trying to derail President Koroma’s efforts?

Published on June 22, 2011

The recent bruhaha over police action in the Sierra Leone Mission in Brussels and the complaint by the country’s Permanent Representative to the European Union (EU), Ambassador Christian Kargbo, that he fired a Mr. Peter J. Kuyembeh because ”he has been working closely with some MOLES in the mission and other parts of Europe in an attempt to derail the good efforts of the President and the Government of Sierra Leone ” deserve to be looked into seriously. As a nation in a hurry for socio-economic and political development , Sierra Leone cannot afford a foreign service that is infested with people trying to derail the efforts of President Ernest Bai Koroma. There must be a thorough investigation of the Ambassador’s allegations and if proved to be true, stringent action must be taken to purge our foreign service of people who are working to derail the efforts of our  President and government.

Since he was elected to office in 2007, President Koroma has been working very diligently to change the face and the fortunes of our nation. People wonder where the President gets the reserves of energy and vitality he uses to work whole day and night and to engage in exhaustive travels to bring desirable socio-economic and political changes in the country . Everyday and night, President Koroma is very busy working with his government officials  and international and local stakeholders to bring more investments, commerce, trade, tourism and developments to our beloved country. In just four years of governance , the President has performed far above expectations and has set the nation on the paths to sustainable socio-economic and political development. What is however becoming distressing is that not all those working for this government have a shared vision with President Koroma. While the President is busy rebuilding the country, others are busy tearing it down . It annoys many of us helping to propagate the President’s achievements when now and again people appointed to positions of trust in government engage in massive corruption and undesirable acts that tend to blemish all the good work of the President. We can choose to be silent over some of these issues but the results will always be detrimental to our government and country.

The Foreign Service is the gateway to Sierra Leone. When you enter any mission or embassy abroad, you have actually entered the Republic of Sierra Leone, though you are tens of thousands of miles  away from the country. The Foreign Service mirrors the nation and its achievements. This is why countries work acidiously to make sure that those working in their foreign service share the vision of the President and his government.

The United States is presently engaged in a bitter war with  terror. Terrorists threaten the peace, safety ,well-being and future of the United States and the country finds that it cannot rest on its oars but must continue fighting terrorists wherever they are found to make America safe from those that are threatening her way of life, core values and future. Can you imagine, therefore, the dangers that lurk everywhere for America  if the country’s  foreign service is infested with people who do not have a shared vision with the President and government on terrorism and matters of national interest ? Osama Bin Laden would never have been nailed because those in the foreign service working against President Obama (If they existed ) would have tipped off Al-Quaida that Osama’s cover had been blown and the the U.S. would soon move against him.

What Ambasador Christian Kargbo said is unsettling. We cannot have moles and retrogressive people in our foreign mission who are not working in tandem with the President and government. It is high time that these allegations are looked into by the government .We cannot afford to be complacent with the national interest. We must get down to the truth and take speedy and positive action.
